About Website Design

Website design is the creation of web pages that are visible through the internet while browsing through a web browser. The design of “WebPages” can be done through different means and with the advancements in software and Internet technology has become a relatively simple task.

Website are built using HTML which stands for Hyper Text Mark Up Language and is a protocol that is used and understood by internet browsers such as Internet Explorer , Firefox , Google chrome and Opera. These browsers tread the page that is loaded and translates the code and the sections that specify the design and layout of the site and make it human readable. The website design will be used to specify the following sections:

1. Layout – where and what is placed on the page.

2. Colours – what colour should be specified for text and other sections of the site

3. Images – where and what images are to be loaded on to the page.

Website design normally follows the smooth transition from Desktop publishing as with both you start off with a blank page and incorporate the requirements of the site within the website design. After all website design is the customers or companies online brochure so the companies branding must be taken in to consideration when initially starting the website design.

There are various packages that can be used in the website design process. One of the most common products is Dreamweaver and is a WYSIWYG Editor (What you see is what you get editor) this mean that it provides a interface for you to design your website and in the background it has a built-in engine that will generate you the required HTML code that the browsers can translate in the customers browser.

Conventionally there is a standard process that is followed when successfully project managing any size of Website design. Below are the basic stages that are required to achieve a successful design project.

1. Scope the outline of the project with the customer present- make notes of any specific branding requirements and colour schemes that may be necessary to include in the website design.

2. Outline to the customer any limitations or cross browser incompatibilities with their initial requirements.

3. From the Initial agreed requirements pass over to the designer to design a basic template of the main pages of the site. This will allow the customer to see the important sections. If it was a shopping cart system for example these would be the Homepage, Category and product listing page and also the product information page. From these pages the customer will have a good idea of how the site will look once implemented in to the shopping cart system.

4. After discussions with the customer there should be an alteration list compiled to allow the designer to make the final alterations to the website design.

5. Once the final alterations to the website design are completed this should then be passed back to the customer for sign off of the design

6. Once the customer has signed the design off the design is ready to be implemented in to the whole of the website.
