Website Sales Boost For M&S

Although Marks and Spencer recently announced the first increase in sales (like for like periods) in 2 years, the high street retail giant broke no records and certainly came in lower than many analysts predicted figures.

One area that caught the eye from the report was the online sales. A massive 32% increase on last year and this is compared to just a 2.6% increase for the whole group. So what caused this jump, was it simply the market share of online sales growing as a whole, or a feature of the M&S business model altering?

One reason that website interest has grown is the re-launch of the website in October of 2009, where a host of new features were implemented for the Christmas rush. Along with a fresh advertising campaign alongside the SEO, one of the largest they have ever produced will have created more interest and clicks in return. Chairman Sir Stuart Rose noted that conditions are still difficult for retail, which makes the 2.6% increase a little sweeter for shareholders, but surely the success of the M&S website marketing will be the icing on the Christmas cake.
