Squidoo Lense SEO

Posted by Mike Campbell on July 28, 2010  |   Comments Off

If you haven’t heard of Squidoo just yet, it’s wrth having a look and creating your own profile. Squidoo is a kind of business, blog or personal flyer which represents whatever you like. For businesses, you have the opportunity to present your services in your own way, which in time can drive traffic (and hopefully sales) your way.

The page you creat on Squidoo is not a profile, they term it a ‘lense’. It’s an insight into a topic which is maintained by you, the creator. There are plenty of useful plugins on Squidoo lenses, including automated feeds which show updates from other profiles like Twitter.

Other ways in which you can create content are RSS feeds from your blog, text blocks where you can create any section of information you like, and there is even the chance to add Google Adsense to the lense, to generate some income for the hard work you have put in.

Unfortunately the links are marked “no follow”, but over time the page can get a good position for your chosen key phrases, so it’s worth half an hour to get one up and running. Best practice methods say you should try to update it every now and then to keep the search engines and viewers interested.

Clean Code in Web Pages

Posted by Mike Campbell on July 25, 2010  |   Comments Off

One thing that search robots hate to see is messy HTML. By this we mean a large amount of unnecessary HTML code for on-page elements such as text (formatted), hyperlinks and page layout / tables.

Web pages always used to have terrible code, mainly before the widespread use of CSS (cascading style sheets) for layout purposes. CSS means that one simple file tells the browser how to display the page, without having to load the on page code every time. This saves time and also means that the tabular layout is not indexed, as it is seperate to the landing pages.

This kind of page has less code, is smaller in size and much more friendly to the search engines. Other types of common mistake includes the pasting of formatted text / fonts from other applications, the most common culprits being Microsoft software like Excel and Word. These 2 popular applications are full of code when displayed in their pages, and this is transferred across when pasted straight into a WYSIWYG editor.

The best way to combat this for the amateur webmaster is to paste text to notepad, then repaste it into your website CMS afterwards. This cleans the code for SEO purposes.

The most important page on your website is nearly always your home page, also known as the index page. The fact it is known by two names also causes one of the first problems. Many websites have an index.html or .php page, and also a plain forward slash that they use when linking to the root of the directory that is the website. In internal and external link building, try to use just one of these, preferably the simple domain then / at the end. Continue Reading…
