Website nomenclature plays an important role when it comes to identification of a particular domain. The Internet is network of interconnected websites and most computers are connected to it through a unique IP address; it’s bit complex in nature and not easy to understand the real basics of how it all works.

Each site has its own IP address on which a particular domain name is assigned to. Names are given in such a way that it may be a simple word or a small sentence which are attractive and easy to remember. Business organisations provide the name of their company for naming their website if possible, or try to get the main target key phrase for their market place (for SEO purposes).

It is registered with an ending on the domain name i.e. ‘.com’ which is purely commercial; or some which are registered under an organisation or charity (.org). Others are country specific like ‘.uk’ which is for UK. There are some new ones available now, simply due to the shear volume of domain names already registered under the original extensions.

Choosing a name is an important factor, which acts as a deciding factor for people to think about visiting a website or not. Choosing the wrong name would result in people thinking that the site is not worthy enough to visit. A good name should be catchy, attractive and should make the visitors think about the contents inside before actually entering into it.

Nowadays there are various companies that provide assistance in generating names for a particular site with the help of certain name generating tools. The major thing to keep in mind while choosing a name is to try to name the site after the company or brand name, or the phrase that is most relevant. Both should be identical if possible; i.e. the name of the site should be same as that of URL.

This reduces confusion among potential visitors and gives them a confirmation that they are visiting the right site according to their needs. Also selecting longer domain names would increase the chance of getting better search results in search engines compared to shorter names, as there is potentially more space to explain the contents of the website. This can aid search engine optimisation as well.
