Optimise Your Home Page

The most important page on your website is nearly always your home page, also known as the index page. The fact it is known by two names also causes one of the first problems. Many websites have an index.html or .php page, and also a plain forward slash that they use when linking to the root of the directory that is the website. In internal and external link building, try to use just one of these, preferably the simple domain then / at the end.

So how do you structure your website home page for SEO? Firstly remember it is almost always the strongest page on your site, so make sure you target the main few key phrases on this page.

Secondly, consider captivating your target market when they arrive, but remember that search engines don’t love too much flash and lots of images when compared to the amount of text. In other words, little information and lots of bright lights won’t mean an awful lot to Google.

Try to mix up the content as much as possible. A short introductory video clip embedded to the page, a nice block of text in the middle to introduce your company and a well structured menu system that helps creates good clusters of information. These clusters should follow a certain theme to help the top level gain importance.

The meta content is also important, because if you just leave your company branding the title, the key word importance on the main page will be diluted. Add the main few key phrases along with the company name to the title, and repeat them in the description and keywords too.

Most of all, link build. Make sure lots of other websites then link to your home page with anchor text that confirms the targeted products or services, then you will start to get up the rankings very quickly.
