Google SEO

When we think about marketing our website the first thing we consider is where we need to be found. Just like with a traditional shop you may consider being seen by way of footfall, the same can be said of a web page. Millions of searches are performed every day on the major search engines and you need people to find your site in the listings.

Google Search is the most popular search engine in the World, and is owned by the parent company Google Inc. Hundreds of millions of searches go through this infamous portal every day. The founders back in 1997 were Sergey Brin and Larry Page. As well as showing relative content for a users search phrase, Google offers a number of other free services. These include Google Docs which offers free space to save documents in popular formats (like MS Excel or Word style), weather, a complete news service, e-mail (Gmail / Googlemail) and an amazing comprehensive maps application.

As this company has the majority of the search market (over 60%) it is the biggest target for companies trying to market their brand, services and products. This inevitably means the competition is highest too, and it becomes harder to succeed with natural, organic results. This is mainly due to the fact that larger companies with the experience and foresight have optimized their company website to perform well. Others trying to emulate this success have found it particularly difficult to catch up in certain areas, and number one positions on Google are now very sought after.

Google SEO is little different to SEO for other search engines, but it is a more focused job to succeed in their rankings and stay there. There are certain tips and measures that Google themselves offer as advice for webmasters, yet the specifics are still an unqualified science to anyone outside the Google Inc. Corporation. To make sure that the spammers on the internet are eradicated, time and investment over the years has made Google notoriously difficult to break with ‘Black Hat’ (quick fix / non genuine) techniques. There really is no other long term solution to winning at Google SEO other than the recommended methods that are there for us all to see. The problem is, Google Search Engine Optimisation is so complicated and in depth it takes not only years of experience to get it right, you also need to continually track changes in the way Google works.

Needless to say, when the results start to kick in, the benefits are great, and vary massively with the key phrase, competition and market demands. Once a top spot on Google is achieved, it’s important not to just forget about it. Constant updates must be made to stop your competitors gaining ground. After all, it takes in excess of 9-12 months with most tough phrases to get high up, so you want to be staying perched at the top!
